1757-1823. English actor and theatre manager.
He excelled in tragedy, including the
Shakespearean roles of Hamlet and Coriolanus.
As manager of Drury Lane 1788-1803 and Covent
Garden 1803-17 in London, he introduced many
innovations in theatrical management,
costume, and scenery. He was the son of the
strolling player Roger Kemble (1721-1802),
whose children included the actors Charles
Kemble and Mrs Siddons.
